Best Professional Chainsaw Buying Guide

There are a number of different things that you should consider when you’re buying a professional chainsaw.

After all, not all models are made equally in terms of quality and what they have to offer.

So, what are the main things that you should be looking for in a professional chainsaw?

Here are the key things to keep in mind.

It’s imperative that you have a chainsaw that possesses more than ample power for you to cut through even the most stubborn woods, and without you making a lot of effort.

Some lower quality chainsaws will require a lot more effort on your part to use them.

Gas powered chainsaws are usually a good choice to get a lot of power. That’s not to say that electric chainsaws aren’t powerful because they certainly are, but they aren’t quite as powerful as gas powered professional chainsaws.

When it comes to engines, the sizes are measured in Cubic Centimeter, or CC for short. You may find engines ranging from 20cc right up to above 100cc.

Ultimately the higher the CC is the more power you will have. Naturally, the more power a chainsaw has, the more it is going to cost you to buy it.

Bar Length

The bar of the chainsaw is the long part that sticks out. It is designed to guide the chains in a circular motion, and is to support the chains.

The length of the bar is essential as it determines the effectiveness of your work.

Bars can usually be as short as 10 inches or as long as 24 inches. This will largely be based on the output of power produced by the chainsaw.

For instance, if you are going to be cutting smaller trees and little branches then a bar ranging from around 10 to 16 inches should be fine for you.

If you are chopping things that are much thicker then you will need a bigger bar.

Generally it’s recommended that you get a bar length that is a minimum of 2 inches longer than the biggest tree in diameter that you are planning on cutting.

This means you are covered no matter what job comes up in future. You can even use different bar lengths and chains on some chain saws so this is also worth thinking about.

You can’t use a chainsaw without having a good set of handles! Every single chainsaw will come with a handle on the rear and the front.

These handles are usually well spaced to make sure that the user has enough control on the tool.

You will find the saw’s operation controls on the rear handle usually, for instance the trigger may be positioned here.

You may find some models that have a top placed rear handle though, and these allow you to control the chainsaw using only one handed.

It should be noted that these models are usually not as safe as the two handle models though.

It’s important that you opt for a professional chainsaw that has a high quality design, and something that has been constructed well.

This helps to make sure that you are kept safe and that you don’t have something that will break in mere months.

Make sure that the chainsaw is made out of high quality materials - you should check the engine, the chain, the bar and any other parts.

You need something that is going to be virtually indestructible.

Maintenance and Use

If you’re buying a professional chainsaw, we’re fairly confident that it’s something that you’re going to be using on a regular basis, perhaps for many hours at a time.

For this reason, the chainsaw that you get should be easy enough to use and maintain.

You will need something that weighs the right amount, something you can control and hold without any problems, and something ergonomic that is comfortable to hold for hours at a time.

After you have used the saw, you also want to  put it away without trouble. Look for a saw that can be disassembled and assembled easily. This also will help if you need to change any parts out, as you can do it much more easily, wasting little time.

You may find yourself spending a small fortune on a professional chainsaw if you don’t set a realistic budget.

Professional chainsaws are designed to be more durable and so they costs to make them are higher. This means you’re paying more money.

You need to think about exactly what you want and need in a chainsaw. You don’t need all of the bells and whistles, and getting something with every single conceivable feature is just going to cost you excessive amounts of money for features you may not even use.

If you have a bigger budget then sure, get the fancy high end models, but there are plenty of great professional chainsaws that won’t cost you an arm and a leg that are just as good.

Left or Right Handedness

Chainsaws are designed to be used right handed. It’s pretty dangerous to use a chainsaw left handedly.

So, you will need to adapt to using it right handedly or you will need to search a little more for an option that is left handed.

Anti Vibration

Anti vibration is a handy feature to have on a professional chainsaw.

Anti vibration can make cutting for long periods of time much more comfortable, and you are less likely to get as tired.

A lot of tools that require a lot of power tend to vibrate a lot, but working to a high standard can be more difficult if the tool constantly vibrates.

You will do a more effective job with a chainsaw that doesn’t vibrate as much.

Spring Assist

A spring assist feature is designed to minimize the pulling power, and it means that you can start up the saw in as little as 2 or 3 pulls.

This is an especially handy, time saving feature.

Chain Brake

Chainsaws can be pretty dangerous tools if used incorrectly.

A chain brake is a very beneficial feature if you and up having some kind of a problem and you suddenly need to stop the saw.

Chain brakes are usually automatic, but some will allow you to active the brake manually as needed.

As we’ve already mentioned, professional chainsaws can cost a lot of money - they’re a big investment!

For this reason, a good warranty is always something that you should look out for.

If your chainsaw has an extended warranty, it will give you more peace of mind that you’ve chosen a high quality product from a company you can trust.

It also means that you have a back up plan in case anything goes wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I sharpen a chainsaw?

It’s important to ensure that you always keep your chain as sharp as you are able to. This will allow you to work much faster, and you aren’t going to use as much fuel to do it.

First of all, grab a pair of protective gloves and put them on. Then, get the bar in a vide position and then activate the chain brake lock.

Then, put a gauge with arrows up towards the nose of the bar. Grab a round file and then file each tooth on a right angle.

Once you have done one whol loop of the chain, just turn the saw around and file the remaining teeth.

After this, just file all of the gauges using a flat file. The chainsaw is then sharpened!

Is it possible to leave my fuel stored inside the chainsaw?

For some chainsaws it’s not too much of an issue to leave your fuel inside of the chainsaw tank for a number of days or weeks.

With that being said, it’s very important that you don’t keep the fuel inside of the gas tank for very long amounts of time.

It may end up creating gum deposits in your fuel system.

If you are not going to be using your chainsaw for more than 30 days then you will need to completely drain the tank of its fuel.

You should then restart the machine and allow it to run, just to make sure there is no fuel remaining.
